Jabba the Rush
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on April 7th, 2009

Here’s Jabba the Rush, courtesy of the folks over at current.com’s Supernews. I debated about posting this, seeing as though it has a couple funny moments but it’s really not all that clever, but my seething hatred for Rush Limbaugh got the better of me. That, and the fact that’s it’s got a Predator walking around in the background.

What does this commercial want me to buy?
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on April 2nd, 2009

Keira Knightley took time off to make this two-minute short film for Women’s Aid to help raise awareness for domestic violence against women. Be warned it gets pretty rough towards the end and isn’t for the faint of heart. I love me some Miss Knightley and was pretty taken aback at her getting beaten down as the camera pulls back but won’t turn away. You can find out more about the project here or check out the Women’s Aid official homepage.

Clean coal, Coen Bros. style
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on February 27th, 2009

Not sure what “clean coal” is exactly? Here’s a short tongue-in-cheek ad by the Coen Bros. to give you you the 411. This is just one in a series of commercials on the subject (read more here).

From the good folks at Funny-or-Die comes this impressive parody trailer for The Wrestler about a washed-up Uncle Sam. I’m only half-kidding when I say this is the best thing I’ve seen with Alyssa Milano in years.

The Keene Act and You
posted by  Mr. Sparkle on February 11th, 2009

That fact that the same guy who directed ‘300′ was giving us the long gestating adaptation of the sacred Geek writing, Watchmen, meant that there was going to be at least a few of the Internets buzzing on its own. But when you throw in the fact that Warner Bros. is distributing the movie - those same brothers who promoted ‘The Dark Knight’ - you know that there’s going to be a lot of extra excitement around the project. Look no further than the two viral videos they’ve put out that take place in the world of ‘Watchmen’ - the first, below, is a PSA newsreel warning against the dangers of “Vigilantes.” The second is a 1970 retrospective of the ten years since Dr. Manhattan took the scene. Watchmen fans should have a lot of fun with these.

10 chick flick cliches that are not in he’s just not that into you
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on January 29th, 2009

Okay, if the film is half as good as this viral gem I might be able to make it through He’s Just Not That Into You without throwing up. Thanks to Eric for the find.

Bradley Cooper, Kevin Connolly, and Justin Long act out ten romcom cliches you won’t be seeing in their upcoming film. My favorite is #6 - “No one in this movie slides down a wall while crying.”

A BeTaMaXMas

I’ve no idea what the point of betamaxmas.com is, but I love it nonetheless. Send yourself back in time to December 1988, see what’s on the tube and browse through the TV Guide (which updates day-to-day).

And yes, all those star-studded Christmas specials and old-school commercials listed in the TV Guide show up on the screen as YouTube clips as you change channels. She-Ra! Pee-Wee’s Playhouse! The California Raisins!

Brilliant.

Bruce Lee: Ping Pong Master
posted by  .alphamonkey. on November 28th, 2008

As much as I would dearly love for the following footage to be legit, I’ll just go ahead and say it’s a rather cleverly done fake: “Lost” Bruce Lee footage showing the star rocking the ping-pong table with his signature nunchaku style. For Nokia phones, no less:

But seriously, folks… how ridiculously awesome would that be were it real?

McCain’s Fear of Palin Presidency Caught on Tape!
posted by  .alphamonkey. on September 18th, 2008

Michael Weingartner and Lee Camp’s ongoing audio bits from the secret files of John McCain simply do not fail to disappoint.

Give a listen to McCain’s comments to an Ohio voter about a possible Palin presidency.

I love how they both give far more and far less credit to McCain than anyone would imagine.

Seinfeld & Gates - BFF!
posted by  .alphamonkey. on September 15th, 2008

I’ll admit that I quite like the Seinfeld and Bill Gates powered Microsoft spots, mostly because they play more like goofy little short films rather than actual ads. There’s a rather charming disconnect between the point of an ad and the theme of the ads (that being both Gates and Seinfeld are utterly removed from everyday life; not exactly the kind of message you expect from a mega-power like Microsoft).

Shoe Circus

Shoe Circus was appropriately weird, while New Family brings home much more of the funny (so much so that Gates himself shows a flash of comic timing), but so far both ads have gotten fairly trashed in the press. C’mon, media mavens! The agency behind this campaign is Crispin Porter + Bogusky… they don’t care if their ads get bad (or even bewildered) press - they count it as a win just as long as they’re being talked about, and how could an ad campaign featuring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates not get discussed? So I’m quite sure that CP+B is counting it as a huge win, even if means a sizable number of media pundits scratching their head.
