Okay, this little advert from the good folks at The Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen made me smile.

Is “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” playing near you?
posted by  Scene-Stealers on July 2nd, 2009

Go here and click on showtimes/tickets to find out. Why, you may ask, would I be interested in seeing a documentary about a heavy metal band in their 50s who are still trying to realize their dream? You’re just going to have to trust me on this one. “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” is one of those expertly told stories with so much heart, humor, and revelatory moments caught on camera, you might think it was fiction. It’s not. It’s all real. The veteran Canadian band is playing shows now and has been following the movie release into some cities as well. Follow their Twitter account @AnvilMovie and see a film that has a lot to say about friendship, loyalty, and perseverance. Read my review here.

G’night, Karl Malden
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on July 1st, 2009

Okay, Karl Malden’s death isn’t going to garner the attention of Michael Jackson or even Farrah Fawcett, but the actor worked for more than 60 years in movies and television before passing away earlier today at the age of 97.

His career highlights included The Sting, Patton, The Streets of San Fransisco, The Cincinnati Kid, Pollyanna, How the West Was Won, Skag, On the Waterfront, Meteor, The West Wing, Captain Courageous, and A Streetcar Named Desire (for which he took home an Oscar). Those who can remember back to the 1970’s might also recall Malden for his series of famous “Don’t leave home without it!” American Express commercials.

G’night Karl, you had a good run.

Top 10 Tuesday - Famous Rain Scenes
posted by  Scene-Stealers on June 30th, 2009

top 10 movie rain scenesUsually around this time of year we’d be doing something like J.D.’s Top 10 “Crazy From the Heat” Movies. However, in New York City, where Scene-Stealers sitegoer Sean O’Connell is from, there has been a ton of rain this summer. Lucky for us, that spurred an entire Top 10 list of famous rain scenes from him.

Rain is usually used to symbolize a rebirth or baptism of some sort by the character involved, but sometimes it’s just used as a gloomy or scary mood-setter. Whatever the device, Sean has compiled his list of Top 10 Movie Rain Scenes for you to enjoy and add to. I already know I need to add John Goodman and William Forsythe in “Raising Arizona” to the list!

Another reason for Homer Simpson to mock Shelbyville
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on June 29th, 2009

shelbyvilleEver wondered what the cost of a Cheetos fight would be? Turns out to be about $5,000.

A 40-year-old couple was arrested, and had to each post a $2,500 bond, for getting into an altercation involving the use of Cheetos. Oh, Shelbyville. I guess Homer was right about you all along. Okay, so it’s not that Shelbyville, but it’s still funny.

G’night, Michael
posted by  .alphamonkey. on June 27th, 2009

G'night, Michael. You certainly don’t need me to tell you that Michael Jackson died on Thursday. I have to admit: This one hit me pretty hard, even though there’s a big part of me that would rather believe Jacko died back in 1988 or so.

We’ve spent more than a few inches of print space on Michael over the years, and I can say that I consider “Off the Wall” and “Thriller” to be two of the best ass-shaking good time records ever recorded.

I remember hearing “Billie Jean” for the first time, riding in the backseat of a car with some friends (on the way to who knows where) and arguing if it was a girl or boy singing (give me a break, I was 10). I sang it incessantly until the utter face-melting glory of “Beat It” was unleashed upon the world. I’ve been a die-hard Michael fan ever since. Sure, he lost me about the time of “Dangerous”, but damn those singles still snuck into my head each time I heard them. To this day I’ll defend “Moonwalker” for nothing else than giving us the “Smooth Criminal” video, which might be last time he really just blew us away with that effortless grace in motion. MJ made this awkward gangly tangly boy want to dance, and that’s saying something.

Hell, “Black and White” still pops into my head on occasion. I bought “Invincible“, for heaven’s sake; hoping, hoping, hoping that it’d have even a trace of that genius Michael left behind. Over the years I went back and discovered the almost effortless joy and power of the Jackson 5, always just floored at how much power and grit that little boy’s voice had at 11 years old. “I Want You Back” is a guaranteed smile on my face to this day by the time the first verse begins.

But at the end of the day there will always be “Off the Wall“. Holy crap, but I love that album. I don’t know ANYONE who can wholly resist movin’ when ‘Rock With You’ or ‘Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough’ comes over the speakers, and it’s been the soundtrack to many a fine dance party at this, and every iteration of Fort Awesome.

It’s with a heavy heart that I say “G’night”, to Micheal at aged 50, but in some ways many fans like myself said it years ago. Even now I look past the freakish surgeries, the insane behavior, the allegations (that I suspect are truer than I’d like to believe), and see a man who effortless bridged the gap between soul, funk, pop, and rock. A troubled and talented soul who for all his faults, will always have those years of genius preserved for eternity.

G’night, Michael. Fade into that beautiful fog-filled laser hallway because you, at long last have gotten enough.

G’night Farrah
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on June 25th, 2009

farah-fawcett-ripThis really bums me out. Just days after learning that Johnny Carson’s longtime sidekick, Ed McMahon, had passed away comes the news that the former Mrs. Majors and original Charlie’s Angel has succumbed to cancer at the age of 62 earlier today in Santa Monica, California.

Although known best for Charlie’s Angels (and this iconic 70’s poster), Farrah Fawcett worked for years in television (I Dream of Jeanie, The Partridge Family, S.W.A.T., Ally McBeal), films (Logan’s Run, The Apostle, Dr. T & the Women), and several off-Broadway productions.

She earned three Emmy nominations, most notably for playing a battered wife in 1984 TV-movie The Burning Bed. And I’ll always remember her fondly for her role as tree-lover Beauty in The Cannonball Run.

G’night Farrah, you will be missed.

posted by  Scene-Stealers on June 23rd, 2009

wall-e sittingMichael Bay’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” has 46 robots this time out, a number which, thanks to the expert visual effects work by the folks at ILM, will no doubt earn his Autobots and Decepticons a very high ranking on any robot list published after tomorrow.

Well, I wrote this list yesterday before seeing the new movie, so it doesn’t include the Transformers. What it does include, however, are 10 of the coolest and most iconic movie robots in cinematic history. To get you ready for the nonstop Bay machine-porn flick that pummels its way into theaters tomorrow, here is my list of the Top 10 Coolest Movie Robots. Have a seat and enjoy!
