The impending budget cuts (cutting funding from $10.4 million to a possible $4 million over the next three years) for the Arecibo Observatory have caused the folks at SETI to mobilize and ask for your help. What is Arecibo? Other than being that awesome site used for the final reel of Goldeneye, Arecibo is the world’s largest radio telescope and the best tool available for the possible discovery of extra-terrestrial life (or any large asteroid or celestial object on a collision course for Earth). SETI is asking for your help to pass the bills in Congress (Senate Bill S. 2862 and House Resolution H.R. 3737) which would fully fund the operation. If funding is cut it would severely hamper the observatory, perhaps even close down the project. What can you do? You can help by becoming part of the Save Arecibo writing campaign and is also accepting donations to continue the search of the heavens for signs of life among the stars.
