Multi-Culture Pals! Many Heroes, One Voice!
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on July 2nd, 2009

How can you not like a super-hero team which includes Black Vulcan, Apache Chief, Juan Gigante, Jesse Jackson, and The French Tickler? Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Multi-Culture Pals:

This comes from “Very Personal Injury” my favorite episode of Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law where the poor hero is forced to sue after a coffee spill prevents him from enlarging.

The Transformers have Fallen and they can’t get up
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on June 24th, 2009

transformers-rotflI hated Michael Bay’s first Transformers, and this second installment is more of the same only longer, louder, sleazier, and (if possible) dumber.

Part Deux is filled with lazy humor, cheap gags (such as multiple shots of humping dogs and robots), a confusing and ridiculous plot (which is so inane characters twice have to stop and explain it not only to us but each other), big, though not too impressive, special effects, and little else. It’s obvious that Bay and screenwriters Ehren Kruger, Roberto Orci, and Alex Kurtzman love robots (wait, it took three of you to write this movie?). What isn’t obvious is if they give two shits about Transformers, or their fans.

I’ve got a “Proposal” for you
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on June 19th, 2009

the-proposalRomantic comedies can scare critics away quicker than a mob racing out of a burning building. It’s hard to warm up to a genre that’s let you down so often, and so consistently. So settling down to watch The Proposal all I really was hoping for was to make it out of the theater with my sanity intact.

Here’s the thing, aside from the contrived device used to get the film’s stars together (and a few best-forgotten groan-worthy scenes), the film actually works better than I expected. It’s not great by any stretch of the imagination, but for the genre it’s above average.

posted by  Cap'n Carrot on June 15th, 2009

Marvel Comics has put a little trailer teasing the return of Steve Rogers, the original Captain America. Take a look.

You can also find out more what Ed Brubaker, Bryan Hitch, and Tom Brevoort have to say about Cap’s return here.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on June 12th, 2009

taking-of-pelham-123-capAs a director Tony Scott is a bit hit (Domino, Spy Game) and miss (Deja Vu, Enemy of the State) for my tastes. His latest, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, is not the first movie to be adapted from the novel by Morton Freedgood, but does showcase Scott’s trademark style.

I had planned to sit down and watch the original before hitting the screening for the new remake, but couldn’t quite find the time. So I can’t tell you how the film measures up to 1974 film with Walter Matthau. What I can tell you is the film delivers your basic “Die Hard in a subway” scenario, with smart crooks, mostly dumb cops, and a twist or two as well.

Do you still want to drink that Coke Zero?
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on June 11th, 2009

coke-zeroI love my Coke, even though they got rid of that tasty Black Cherry Vanilla, but this news can’t be good for those of you who like Coke Zero.

It seem Venezuela has banned the product, from the entire country, after citing health concerns with the local bottling plant (can you still call it a bottling plant if they’re putting it in cans?). That’s right folks, Coke Zero isn’t healthy enough for Venezuela.

So, do you still want to down that can in your hand? You can read more of the story here.

IBM meet MightyGodKing
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on June 1st, 2009

mightygodking-ibm-spoofThese are too good not to share. This collection of hilarious slides (as you can from this example definitely fall into the NSFW category) was inspired by this 1975 IBM presentation, which isn’t nearly as funny, but still worth a look (if only to better understand the reference of the joke).

Honestly, I couldn’t stop laughing. Thanks MightyGodKing!

Catman, Calendar Man, and Bat-Mite. Oh, my!
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on June 1st, 2009

Catman and Calendar Man, plus Bat-Mite? Oh yeah! Not to mention Mr. Zero, Kite-Man, Gorilla Grodd, Solomon Grundy, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, Ace the Bat-Hound, Mr. Polka-Dot, Killer Moth, Tiger Shark, and a Fifth-Dimesion Comic-Con panel. Paul Dini gives us “Legends of the Dark Mite,” the best episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold yet, which even includes a nice nod to the intro for Batman: The Animated Series and the use of one of the ‘buddha offices favorite phrases “Awesomesauce.” In this clip Bat-Mite’s imagination gets the better of him as more and more of Batman’s rogues gallery appears. You can check out the full episode here.

Thursday Top Ten Toys They Never Made
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on May 28th, 2009

George Lucas taught the world a lesson in terms of marketing and merchandising, but there are several movies and television shows which didn’t learn the lesson. Today’s Top Ten takes a look at franchises which missed the boat by not putting out a series of toys which I, and at least a half-dozen other people, would have gladly paid good money for (and are still willing to do so, so start making ‘em already!). We begin with…

greg-the-bunny10. The Lovable Critters of Sweetknuckle Junction - My introduction to Greg and his wacky pals wasn’t from the original IFC shorts but from the FOX sitcom where they quickly earned a place in my heart. I’m a big fan of the show (check out my DVD review), and although it lasted only one season Greg was able to go back to his roots by returning to IFC.

Whether it was puppets or small figures (how about a Sweetknuckle playset?), it seems there’s plenty of options for merchandising here. I’d love to have a Count Blah puppet (and one with a pull-string which just said “Blah” would continually bring a smile to my face). And who wouldn’t want Greg, Tardy the Turtle, and an alphamonkey, um, I mean Warren, one as well.

Dance Flick missteps its way to mediocrity
posted by  Cap'n Carrot on May 22nd, 2009

dance-flickWhat are you doing reading a review for this movie? Come to think of it, what was I doing going to a screening of it? You know exactly what this movie is, and you knew before you ever started reading this review whether it’s for you or not.

There are no surprises with Dance Flick. What you see is what you get, most of it bad. The new film from the Wayan Bros. is yet another entry into the sub-genre of cheap parody films which has produced one or two fun flicks, such as the first Scary Movie, but also filled up the DVD bargain bin at your local Best Buy and the late night B-movie channels on cable.
