Top 10 Tuesday- Product Placement!
posted by  Scene-Stealers at 9:15 am on May 26th, 2009

tropic thinder tivoThe movie industry is always looking for help when it comes to financing motion pictures, especially the really big, expensive kind. Companies who lay down lots of cold, hard cash are molding products, logos, and slogans into the very building blocks of our entertainment, often without audiences even realizing it. The new trend, of course, is to mock product placement even as you feature the product: “30 Rock,” I’m looking at you!

Today’s Top 10 look at product placement comes from Elliot Kort and Abby Olcese, the Two Awesome Movie Nerds from Lawrence, KS. Check out their own personal list of favorite Top 10 Product Placements in Movies here. Also, be sure and leave them some comments because there are a metric crap-ton of other prominently featured products in movies these days. Let’s hear what you have to say, too! If you have a Top 10 list of your own, email me at eric@scene-stealers.com.

Ed Asner talks Up his new film
posted by  Cap'n Carrot at 8:00 am on May 26th, 2009

Who doesn’t love Ed Asner? Here’s a couple quick clips of Asner discussing his role as Carl Fredrickson, the grumpy old man who takes his home up, up and away on an adventure in Up. The film his theaters on Friday, and check back with us ’cause I’m thinking we’ll have an opinion or two to share about Pixar’s latest.

Catwoman escapes. Oh Batman!
posted by  Cap'n Carrot at 6:00 pm on May 25th, 2009

catwoman-1Batman might be the scourge of the underworld, but doesn’t it seem like Catwoman has had more than her share of close escapes from the Caped Crusader over the years? Looking back at her first appearance in Batman #1 (way back in 1940) there might be a clue as to why ol’ pointy ears was unable to bring the sexy cat burglar to justice. Just goes to prove that even Batman is just a man. A lonely, horny man.

Oh Batman!

Johnny Cash and Rosco P. Coltrane
posted by  Cap'n Carrot at 4:00 pm on May 22nd, 2009

Now you may be asking yourself what the two have in common. Well, earlier this week I was reminded of The Dukes of Hazard Soundtrack (no, not from the regrettable film, but from the original TV show). So as we rock on to the weekend here’s a double dose of Dukes goodness starting with Johnny Cash belting out a ballad for the ol’ General Lee and finishing with Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane singing about his best friend, Flash. Enjoy your three-day weekend folks!

Dance Flick missteps its way to mediocrity
posted by  Cap'n Carrot at 11:00 am on May 22nd, 2009

dance-flickWhat are you doing reading a review for this movie? Come to think of it, what was I doing going to a screening of it? You know exactly what this movie is, and you knew before you ever started reading this review whether it’s for you or not.

There are no surprises with Dance Flick. What you see is what you get, most of it bad. The new film from the Wayan Bros. is yet another entry into the sub-genre of cheap parody films which has produced one or two fun flicks, such as the first Scary Movie, but also filled up the DVD bargain bin at your local Best Buy and the late night B-movie channels on cable.

“Sin Nombre” a stirring tale of hardship
posted by  Scene-Stealers at 10:45 am on May 22nd, 2009

sin-nombreFirst-time writer/director Cary Fukunaga’s Sin Nombre is a movie about devastating and emotionally draining moments. What makes it unique among films that cover similar subject matter is the restrained acting and richness of its visual sense. In that respect, it is a descendant of a less showy cinematic lineage.

Interview: Rian Johnson
posted by  Mr. Sparkle at 9:00 am on May 22nd, 2009

afifest2008screeningbrothersbloomarrivals2ap7kcdrxv6lUs Transbuddhas don’t often get the chance to meet and interview any big dogs from the business. So a month ago, when I offered the chance to interview Rian Johnson, director of 2006’s much-loved teenage noir mystery Brick, and the just-now-hitting-theaters con-man-comedy The Brothers Bloom, I jumped at the chance. Johnson’s a talent who’s just getting started on what I’m sure will be a great collection of films. He’s also a super nice dude and a lot of fun to interview. Read on for proof!

Comic Rack - Captain America, a new Batman, & Herogasm

Captain America #50 - Happy Birthday Buck! Nice little “this is your life” story setting the table for next issue (#600, as they return to the original numbering). Nothing real special, but some fine moments. Now what I’m wondering is if the next issue will pull a Joss Whedon, now that he has everything, and yank the rug out from under poor Bucky with a death, a return, or both? Oh, and, um, isn’t that version of Ms. Marvel supposed to be, you know, dead?

Terminator Salvation - A pictorial review

Rather than do a straight movie review for Terminator Salvation I decide to try something a bit different. After the jump you will find a review in pictures, with a few guiding phrases added by yours truly. Caution: it does contain spoilers!

‘Terminator’ Franchise’s Salvation? Ehh not so much.
posted by  Mr. Sparkle at 10:00 am on May 21st, 2009

phaqmfej8kbqdj_mThere’s a reason the ‘Terminator’ franchise has been so successful over its 25-year-history - in addition to all the cool robots and great action, there’s been a strong sci-fi base underneath that gives you something to think about after the excitement of the explosions has worn off. Without that, you’d just have another action movie. And when you replace the “great action” with “mediocre action,” you get Terminator Salvation.
