Androidkids 2
posted by  Cap'n Carrot at 12:00 pm on June 15th, 2009

A cute little time waster for you. If a class of elementary school kids sat down and made their own version of Super Mario Bros. it might look quite a bit like Androidkids 2. Simple controls: Use the Arrow-keys for direction, Space bar to Jump, and the Shift-key to drop bombs.

History, Retold. Except better this time.
posted by  Just Plain Bob at 10:30 am on June 15th, 2009

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Drunk History, a series of videos (far too few, if you ask me) wherein intelligent people are given way too much alcohol, and then asked to recount historical events.

As a bonus, the makers of these films convinced actors like Michael Cera and Jack Black to mime out the stories as they’re told by the inebriated historians. Volumes 1-4 (including 2.5!) are hilarious, and, despite their age, one can only pray that more are in the works.

Drunk History, Volume 1

(Beware YouTube imitators: it seems an awful lot of people have decided to try their hand at drunken histories of their own)

Unintentionally sexual comic book covers
posted by  Cap'n Carrot at 9:30 am on June 15th, 2009

unintentional-sexual-comic-coverHere’s a short but sweet list of five funny unintentionally sexual comic book covers. Part 1 includes The Rifleman, Suberboy, and Tarzan, but from the scarcity of posts from the author in the last six months it seems we won’t be getting part 2 any time soon, if at all.

Just another acoustically Manic Monday

Another Monday. Here are the Bangles performing an acoustic rendition to their 1986 hit “Manic Monday.” How are you on your pop trivia? Can you name the singer/songwriter who wrote the song for them?

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3
posted by  Cap'n Carrot at 10:15 am on June 12th, 2009

taking-of-pelham-123-capAs a director Tony Scott is a bit hit (Domino, Spy Game) and miss (Deja Vu, Enemy of the State) for my tastes. His latest, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, is not the first movie to be adapted from the novel by Morton Freedgood, but does showcase Scott’s trademark style.

I had planned to sit down and watch the original before hitting the screening for the new remake, but couldn’t quite find the time. So I can’t tell you how the film measures up to 1974 film with Walter Matthau. What I can tell you is the film delivers your basic “Die Hard in a subway” scenario, with smart crooks, mostly dumb cops, and a twist or two as well.

Thursday Top Eight Eddie Murphy Movies
posted by  Cap'n Carrot at 3:00 pm on June 11th, 2009

Eddie Murphy has had, to put it kindly, a colorful career. Murphy’s name alone attached to a project has been known to make a theater full of critics groan. What happened? How did this once-funny man lose it? It’s gotten so bad I don’t even have the strength to make it to the theater to see the types of things he’s putting out these days (such as Imagine That, hitting theaters tomorrow). Now I could probably have done a worst ten Murphy films, but that wouldn’t be that hard. Instead, here are some of Murphy’s best, or at least most watchable, films. This list is a much more difficult enterprise than a “worst of” list, which is why it only includes eight films.

trading-places8. Trading Places - I’m not as big a fan of Trading Places as many are, but there’s certainly enough good here to earn it a spot on the list. Murphy stars as a street hustler whose life is switched with that of a well-to-do businessman (Dan Aykroyd). It is part of a bet between two rich guys (Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche) as to the nature of man and how someone would change if their financial situation was suddenly altered dramatically. There are some laughs and a young Jamie Lee Curtis has a supporting role as a prostitute who falls in love. The movie isn’t exactly a classic, but it’s well known and it seems like there’s not a month that goes by you can’t find it playing somewhere on cable.

Comic Rack - Batman, X-Men, Sonic, Khan & Red Robin
posted by  Cap'n Carrot at 10:00 am on June 11th, 2009

This week we begin with Dick Grayson, end with Tim Drake, and have a little fun in-between…

batman-687

Batman #687 - This one should have come out before Batman and Robin #1 instead of a week after (same for Red Robin #1, which appears to take place somewhere between the two). Even if the continuity is thusly jumbled a tad, the issue nicely summarizes the state of things post-Bruce Wayne Gotham before finally giving us what we’ve paid to seen in the issue’s final frame: Dick Grayson as Batman. For good measure they threw in a little Scarecrow action, too. Worth picking up.

Do you still want to drink that Coke Zero?
posted by  Cap'n Carrot at 9:15 am on June 11th, 2009

coke-zeroI love my Coke, even though they got rid of that tasty Black Cherry Vanilla, but this news can’t be good for those of you who like Coke Zero.

It seem Venezuela has banned the product, from the entire country, after citing health concerns with the local bottling plant (can you still call it a bottling plant if they’re putting it in cans?). That’s right folks, Coke Zero isn’t healthy enough for Venezuela.

So, do you still want to down that can in your hand? You can read more of the story here.
