If you haven’t had a holiday for a while, it may be due to the cost of travel. If this is the case, you’re not alone. Many people see travel bloggers and Instagram influencers living it up in luxurious hotels and assume this is the only way to travel.

As someone who has travelled for years on a budget, I can tell you that this couldn’t be further from the truth. There truly is a travel style for every budget. Here are 5 ways you can save money on your next holiday:

1. Choose your destination carefully

If you have $2000 to spend on a holiday, that money will go a lot further in somewhere like Thailand or Indonesia than it will in the United States or France. For Australians and Kiwis, there are continually excellent Bali deals advertised, with cheap flights and accommodation, and Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands can all be reached without too much jetlag.

By taking the time to compare how far your money would go in different destinations, you’ll be able to choose somewhere you’re interested in visiting without blowing your budget.

2. Take a tour

Believe it or not, but tours can give you excellent bang for your buck. That’s because the tour company has negotiated with wholesalers to get cheaper prices. By paying for a tour, you’ll not only meet plenty of other like-minded travellers, but you can also stretch your travel dollars much further. 3. Shop around

When it comes to flights and accommodation, you’ll find a huge variety based on where you’re going, the time of year you’re planning to travel, and the type of deals each website can get. That’s why it’s a good idea to spend some time comparing your options before you purchase.

4. Be flexible

The best deals go to the people who are available for them. That might mean travelling in the off-season or pulling the kids out of school a week before school holidays to get a much better deal. The more flexible you can be, the more money you can save.

5. Slow down

It can be tempting to do a whirlwind tour and visit six countries in four weeks, but this will drain both your energy and your bank account. Instead of visiting countries for the sake of visiting them, slow down and spend longer in each place. You’ll get to interact with locals, explore different neighborhoods, and return home actually feeling like you’ve been on holiday.
