Whether you’ve always been an insomniac, or you’re simply going through a stage, the frustration of constantly tossing and turning, and the fact that you’re constantly feeling like a zombie through the day can leave you at your wits end.

While it’s true that most people aren’t getting enough sleep, some people are definitely getting more than others. Some of it is simply a case of learning good sleep habits, but there are also some things you can do to ensure you’re getting a good night’s sleep:

Be Consistent

If you’re going to bed at 12.30am one day, 9.30pm the next, and 11pm the night after that, your body just won’t understand what’s going on. If you’re aiming to get a good nights sleep, you need to figure out the best time for you to go to sleep depending on what time you usually get up each day, and stick to it. Getting into a good routine is one of the best ways to make sure we actually get the snooze we need each night

Relax

It may seem easy to say, but relaxing is the key to a good night of sleep. Have you ever noticed that the harder you try to get to sleep and the more worried you get about how many hours you have left before you need to wake up, the longer it takes? It’s not until you’re completely relaxed that you can go to sleep, so you need to make a conscious effort to turn off your mind.

That means refusing to think about work at night, and having a cut off when you stop working every day. Consider taking up meditation or yoga and you’ll quickly find that you’re more relaxed in your everyday life and it’s easier to get to sleep.

Check your Mattress

How long have you had your mattress? Was it passed down by a well-meaning relative? Does it sag in the middle? Often we replace our furniture as it wears out but forget our mattresses, even though we spend more time on them than anywhere else in the house. Check the warranty on your mattress, as that’s a good way to see when it should have been dumped, and look for signs of sagging and wear and tear.

You also may be struggling with allergies or constantly tossing and turning at night. This can be due to dust mites and allergens which tend to get out of control in older mattresses and can be terrible for our health. Buy a new mattress online if you need to, and you’ll be sure to get a better night sleep.

Workout

While exercise often gives us more energy, it also helps regulate our hormones and makes us more likely to get a better snooze each night. Find a type of exercise or a sport you love and be sure to commit to at least 3-5 times a week. You’ll notice that both your health and sleep improve.
