One of the easiest ways to stray from a commitment to a healthy diet is to leave home. Our kitchens are where our natural and organic ingredients are stored and where we keep our appliances that make preparation fast and simple. Travel may be exciting, but hours spent in airports and in food courts close to waiting rooms may make you feel tempted to grab something you otherwise wouldn’t eat. You may think that just a few hours during travel time won’t matter, but that is when you need to eat healthy food, because traveling requires endurance.

Pre-Packing Snacks

Having some healthy alternatives to the offerings at the airport may be as simple as placing a bag of treats in your carry-on luggage or purse. You may be surprised at how easy it is to tote your favorite healthy treats on the go. The name of the game is to keep it simple and think about what foods will provide you with fuel as you travel. Arriving at airport security, spending what could be hours waiting, flying and standing to retrieve your luggage can take its toll, so think of foods that take up only a small amount of space and give you the energy you need.

Go Nuts

Nuts are among the most portable and most nutritious natural foods. You can easily put some almonds or walnuts in a zip baggie and put them in a pocket or bag. You need fat to stave off hunger and cravings, so nuts are an efficient snack because they keep you satisfied for long periods of time. Chick peas and fava beans are high-protein foods and are rich in vitamins or minerals. You can purchase roasted chick peas at a health food store or place them flat on a pan and roast them with garlic or plain. Simply spread out the chick peas on a pan at 400 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes until they are crisp. Let them cool completely before placing them in a plastic bag.

Be Fruitful 

Dried fruit keeps much longer than regular fruit, involves less mess while eating and do not have pits or seeds that require disposal. Purchase your dried fruit at a natural food store to ensure they don’t contain harmful additives. In addition, be on the lookout for candied dried fruit that may contain additional sugar. Fruit in its dried form contains a rich assortment of vitamins and minerals and provides similar health benefits to fresh fruit, but bring a bottle of water to compensate for the lack of moisture.

For the Sweet Tooth

If you feel like something a bit more decadent than fruit and nuts, but don’t want to eat unhealthy food, try baking your own healthy cakes and cookies at home before taking off to the airport.
