If you’re hoping to travel sometime soon, you may assume you need thousands of dollars in your bank account before you can even think about booking a trip. While it’s nice to have some solid savings, travel doesn’t necessarily mean expensive hotels in top destinations in the middle of peak season.

It’s now possible to find super cheap flights with Webjet and other websites. You can also snag great deals on tours, hotel rooms, and Webjet cheap travel insurance– as long as you’re being smart and flexible.

Here are some reasons why travel can be cheaper than you think:

Competition

AirBnb, Couchsurfing, and discount sites are all giving the average hotel chain a run for its money. We live in a world where it’s easy to scout deals from the comfort of your own couch, and industry disruptors are coming in and making it much cheaper for the average traveller.

Food options are plentiful

Travellers no longer need to eat out for every meal. If you’re staying somewhere with a kitchen, you can easily head to the local supermarket or market for some fresh ingredients and make a meal. At the very least, some bread and peanut butter or a box of cereal easily takes breakfast out of the equation.

Limit yourself to eating out once a day- lunch is usually a cheap option, and get out of the tourist areas for better food at a cheaper price.

There’s plenty of free things to do

You’ll be surprised at just how many free things there are to do in each city. From museums to landmarks, parks and more, many of these are free- you just need to know where to look. Even a free walking tour can be an excellent option- just save a few dollars to tip your guide and you’ll easily get to know the city without needing to pay for a bus tour.

Some destinations are cheaper than others

Sure, if you’ve been dreaming about a week in Paris, you may need to do some serious saving. But there are plenty of incredible destinations that are dirt cheap and where the locals are friendly and love tourists. Places like Bosnia, Cambodia, and Guatemala may sound a little too off-the-beaten path, but you’re guaranteed an adventure and you’ll have enough money to see everything you want to see.
