Fort Lauderdale is often overlooked in favor of Miami, but tourists who are in the know are increasingly choosing this city over others in the area. After all, if you rent a car in Fort Lauderdale, you can easily see some of the cities and towns nearby, while enjoying the quieter, more relaxed vibe in Fort Lauderdale.

Here are some of the top things to do in this exciting city:

Visit the NSU Art Museum

This museum was built back in 1958, and its mission is to showcase the best of the region’s art from the 20th century. It sprawls over 75,000 square feet, and the building was designed by Edward Barnes, a well-known local artist.

In this museum, you’ll find more than 6,000 items which tell the story behind South Florida’s art scene. There are also pieces by big names like Pablo Picasso, along with many artists from Cuba. Some exhibits are rotating, and some are static, so you’ll always be able to find something new when you visit.

See the Car Museum

The Fort Lauderdale Antique Car Museum has a massive range of cars and other vehicles on display- all from the Packard Motor Company. For vintage car enthusiasts, this attraction shouldn’t be missed, with automobiles dating from 1900. While there are plenty of different cars to see, you’ll also find other memorabilia here, including custom shift knobs, lamps, and car ornaments. You can either go for a self-guided walk or take a guided tour to learn all about the history of these cars.

Take a Gondola Tour

Las Olas Gondola tours are run by a father/daughter team, and this duo knows the Fort Lauderdale waterways like the back of their hands. One of the best ways to see the area’s fauna and flora is from the water, and these tours will take you around the many canals bisecting the city.

There are a bunch of experiences to choose from, including sunset cruises, holiday packages, and more.

Consider a road trip

While there’s plenty to do in Fort Lauderdale, Florida is well-known for its exciting attractions. If you choose car rental in Fort Lauderdale, you’ll be able to enjoy these attractions in your own time- while keeping Fort Lauderdale as a base. Head to the Everglades, where you can watch alligators lying in the sun, scream your lungs out on the rollercoasters in Orlando, or simply drive until you find something worth stopping for.

Hit the beach

There’s no doubt that the beaches are some of the biggest reasons to visit this part of the country, and Fort Lauderdale has some excellent options to choose from. These beaches are well-known for pristine, unspoiled sand and clear blue water, and there are many water sports waiting for you to try- ranging from surfing to water skiing. Alternatively, bring a book and sunbathe for a few hours while listening to the waves crashing on the shore.

Hit the Boulevard

Las Olas Boulevard is one of Fort Lauderdale’s most well-known spots, and a must-visit whether you’re taking a weekend away or will be in the area for longer. Here, you’ll find upscale boutiques and quirky shops, along with art galleries, excellent nightlife, and some of the best restaurants in the state.

Check out Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

This park is incredibly peaceful, and home to many different local species, including more than 200 birds. If you love hiking or biking, there are plenty of hiking trails, along with stretches of beach so you can relax in the sun.
