When you’re an impatient person, saving can be a really challenging thing as you’re so much more interested in instant gratification. That can make it tempting to spend your money on something small today, rather than putting it away for something big in future.

You might be surprised to know that a recent study reveals that 84% of British people considered themselves impatient. A new study by retailer 4imprint uncovered to exactly what extent we feel that we ‘Need it Now’. Some examples include: 25% of respondents said they would hang up a phone call if they were on hold for more than five minutes. Almost 1/5th say they never read to the end of articles – I hope that’s not you! The independent study was commissioned by the company with findings published in a new report following the growth of its 1-day express service for people with tight deadlines to meet. As you can imagine, all these impatient, instant gratification seeking qualities mean that it is harder to save.

If you fall into that category, here are 3 tips to help you save for your next holiday.

1. Save a Lot, Spend a Little

If saving a lot for something way down the line, like a holiday, feels impossible to you then it might be nice to implement a strategy where you spend a little and save a lot. Maybe you choose to ‘treat yourself’ with something small – like a drink out with a friend, or an inexpensive piece of jewellery and put the bulk of your spare cash away in savings. This can be a great way to get ahead if you find saving really abstract.

2. Make a Vision Board

Really focusing on your goal can make it easier to be patient and make sacrifices in the short term for a bigger dream. The easiest way to make a vision board, is to sign up for a Pinterest account and make a board devoted to your holiday. You can pin picks of places where you want to stay, what it looks like there and the things you’ll do. The more real in your mind you can make it, the easier to save towards it.

3. Get Competitive

One thing that can serve as the perfect distraction for someone who struggles to put money aside for the long haul is to get competitive with a friend. Find someone else who’s saving for something big and make it a competition to see who can put the most away every week or month. You’ll be surprised by how much that friendly competition can help you stay motivated, even when it seems forever away.

Being impatient doesn’t have to get in the way of your goals. Use these tips to get yourself on the path to saving big for your next holiday.
